If you decide to visit Velika planina without taking the cable car, there are several starting points and hiking trails leading to the plateau.
You can drive up to one of the parking areas below Velika planina and continue on foot from there. The trails are suitable for families with children, provided they are used to moderate walking and gentle ascents. You can choose among three options:
Rakove ravni — the largest parking area; from here, marked trails lead to the plateau, taking about 2 hours in one direction with 500 metres of elevation gain.
Ušivec — from this point, you have about 1 hour of pleasant, easy walking among shepherds’ huts and pastures, with 280 metres of elevation gain.
Mačkin kot — the closest parking area; the hike from here takes around 40 minutes with 230 metres of elevation gain.
If you enjoy longer routes and more demanding ascents, these options offer a true mountain experience:
From Kamniška Bistrica via Dolski graben and Planina Dol — a genuine mountain tour combining fresh alpine air, streams, and beautiful views. Walking time is 3 hours, with 1,126 metres of elevation gain.
Via Sveti Primož — a more dynamic and sporty route that rewards persistence with breathtaking views. Walking time is 3 hours and 40 minutes, with 1,236 metres of elevation gain.
